Michael K. Jackson presents The Power of a P.L.A.N. in the Face of Adversity to Dr. Brad Miller on Episode 159 of the Beyond Adversity Podcast.
Michael K. Jackson is a Caribbean American inspirational keynote speaker, Master Trainer, author, and emotional resilience & well-being strategist. As Founder and CEO of Michael K. Jackson International, Michael leverages over two decades of business, ministry, and government leadership experience to advance his mission to inspire, empower, and equip purpose-driven leaders around the world to bounce back from setbacks and “build back stronger” from stress and adversity.
In Episode 159 Michael shares with Dr. Brad the emotional story of losing his father to a devastating hurricane that struck his native US Virgin Islands in 2017. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Michael organized hurricane disaster relief efforts through his church which included leading mission teams and raising money, and procuring supplies. He came to realize that he had formulated a process to face and overcome adversity even in disastrous circumstances.
His experiences and background lead Michael to develop his signature message, “Build Back Stronger: The Power of a P.L.A.N. in the Face of Adversity.” He talks to Dr. Brad about his 4-step plan to “hurricane-proof” your life when you face adversity.
The conversation focused on emotional resilience and well-being. Succeeding with faith, vision, purpose, and perseverance and defeating fear, anxiety, and doubt.
Michael emphasized the four main points of his P.L.A.N. to build back stronger with Dr. Brad:
- P-Prayer and Meditation
- L-Lean In to Listen to Life Lessons
- A-Act Accordingly
- N-Notate Your Mind State (relating to journaling)
Michael is the co-author of the Amazon Best Seller, “Speaking My Truth: 50 Real-Life Stories that Inspire, Empower, Heal and Transform.”
Michael emphasized to Dr. Brad that people make a choice when it comes to facing adversity in their life, they can either see adversity as the enemy or adversity as their advisor.
In Episode 159 of the Beyond, Adversity Podcast Michael K. Jackson gives a great blueprint for the person who chooses to see adversity as an advisor.

158. How to Use a Framework to Optimize Decision Making with the Author of “Choose Better” Dr. Timothy Yen
Do you ever feel like your best is not enough? Or that you know you’re not living the way you want to live but do not know how to change? Or simply feel too many negative feelings that it is hard to focus on anything else? If you said yes to any of these questions, there is hope because you do not have to live this way anymore!
Knowledge is power. People cannot act upon what they do not know. How does someone obtain knowledge of the outside world? You can read, watch informational media, or ask a friend. How about learning more about yourself and living well? You can definitely figure it out on your own through trial and error which may take 1, 5, or 10 years OR you can receive guidance by gaining more clarity and skills which can save you a great deal of time, energy, and potential heartache. If you are seeking answers to your life challenges and want it done in a supportive, non-judgmental, and professional way, then counseling with me may be the answer!
I believe in counseling as a collaborative process. That means you already have many strengths and life experiences that are vital to answering some of your life questions. My role is to highlight those strengths, uncover certain thoughts or behavioral patterns that are either working for or against you and find ways to live a life aligned with what is most important to you. My theoretical orientation is primarily family systems theory and cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) which means I take the whole context of a person into account and believe it is crucial to managing one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I also incorporate other theories and skills (e.g., Positive Psychology, Psychodynamic, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), etc.) for more integrated and holistic treatment.
Lastly, my personal faith and graduate education in therapy included biblical studies from a Christian worldview. As a result, even though I see clients of all faiths or no faith backgrounds, one of my areas of expertise is Christian member care. When integrating faith, I take a client-centered approach and honor the client’s lead in spiritual emphasis. Often, clients pursue to live a kingdom-centered life while grappling with emotional and relational challenges.

Her book “Blue Sky Morning” addresses the life of a woman whose idyllic life was suddenly devastated by an automobile crash and her road to recovery. Her children’s book “The Too Tall Giraffe” helps children to discover that their strength resides in their differences.
Christine has a flair for finding adventure and the ability to ignore those who tell her how to live life, Christine is living a life without limits. Dr. David Phelps the author of “What’s Your Next?: The Blueprint for Creating Your Freedom Lifestyle” is Dr. Brad Miller’s guest on Episode 156 of the Beyond Adversity Podcast.
In an in-depth conversation, Dr. Phelps talks to Brad about what actions you can take when you are faced with profound adversity involving your family.
Dr. David Phelps owned and managed a private practice dental office for more than 21 years. While still in dental school, he began his investment in real estate by joint-venturing with his father on their first rental property in 1980. Three years later, they sold the property and David took His $25,000 capital gain share and leveraged it into 31 properties that later produced $15,000 monthly net cash flow.
Life was good, the sky was the limit –until the dark day that David’s daughter, Jenna, was diagnosed with Leukemia. In the midst of cancer treatments, epilepsy and ultimately a liver transplant for Jenna, David made the crucial decision to leave clinical practices so that he could spend every moment with his daughter.
David’s “Plan B” (a portfolio of cash-flow producing real estate assets) gave him the Freedom to focus 100% on what mattered most to him. Jenna won the battle with the disease, and David still enjoys the Freedom to cherish every moment with her that he can.
Today, David is a nationally recognized speaker on creating Freedom, building real businesses, and investing in real estate. He also combines his professional and personal experiences to illustrate how the tactical and aspirational work together. David helps other logical, rational professionals become dreamers, then strategically manifest those dreams into Freedom. He authors a monthly newsletter, “Path to Freedom” and hosts “The Dentist Freedom Blueprint” podcast. Freedom Founders Mastermind Community grows exponentially, year by year, providing the pathway to Freedom for many professionals.
David is the author of What’s Your Next: The Blueprint for Creating Your Freedom Lifestyle, along with two other books: The Apprentice Model: A Young Leader’s Guide to an Anti-Traditional Life and From High Income To High Net Worth for Dentists.
