I believe that you can have I believe that you can have your promise life which is alive when you’ve overcome adversity and where you now have a place where you have a sense of calm of peace of purpose of place. That’s what we all want, isn’t it? The Bible is sometimes called that the promised land, the place where we journey through adversity to achieve your goal, or your final destination of a place of peace. But you in order to get there friends, you got to believe it. You gotta really believe it, then you gotta work for it. It’s a story about a community where the drought in this farm community had really impacted the crops really badly. And it was bad. No rain for a long time. hot, dry. folks were getting desperate, their crops were burning up in the fields. And one Sunday, the pastor of the small church in the community said there isn’t anything that’s going to save us except to pray for rain. So he told his parishioners go home, believe and come back next Sunday ready to thank God for sending rain. So the people did what they were told and return they went home and they prayed and and they returned to church the following Sunday. But as they came in, as soon as the pastor saw them, he was furious. He was mad. He said, we can’t worship the day, you do not believe. But the people said we prayed and we believed. Believe, said the pastor, then where are your umbrellas? I think that story applies to all of us. Because sometimes we say we believe but maybe we really don’t. And we really don’t because we leave our umbrellas at home. That is we haven’t taken the proper action. To follow up with our belief. We are we’re just kind of in that, you know, hope against hope or wish against wish and, and just not really, truly believing in our core that good things going to happen to us. We don’t expect much. So we get little Am I want I want to share with you today, Francis, pray big dreams, but work hard towards it. And believe that your belief and your prayers will bear fruit. Many of us as expect our dreams and our desires will just pass us by as if we were just going through kind of going through the motions. And other people have belief and expectation and good things happen. So my my question to you today, Francis, what approach you want to go for you want to go through the motions? And that really believe that good things can happen to you? Or do you want to live in a land of belief? Work hard towards achieving it? That doesn’t mean bad things don’t happen to us? Of course they do. We have you know, we have a death of a loved one. We have terrible disease, we have financial problems, all kinds of stuff can happen to us that circumstances. But I’m talking about a deep abiding deep down belief that you really truly believe and have faith that will happen. But it really doesn’t happen friends unless we work hard for it too. So my question to you Do you believe it
Unknown Speaker 4:30
or not?
Brad Miller 4:34

Hello again, good people and welcome to the pathway to promise podcast with Dr. Brad Miller where it is our mission. It is our purpose, to be an encourager in your life, to be a purveyor of hope to help you overcome any adversity that you have to achieve success, what we call the promise life of peace, prosperity, and purpose. And we do so by telling great stories, like today’s story called decider in chief. And by interviewing and talking with great leaders, who have strategies and who have overcome adversity in their own lives, and they have lessons to teach us. You can check all that out at our website, pathway promise com, we got a free gift for you there for a minute way to frame your day for success. You can check that out. You can also check us out at iTunes, and on Facebook facebook.com slash pathway promise today decider in chief. Joseph Henry was a great American scientists who was one of the initial people to start what we now know as the Smithsonian Institute, that great incredible Museum in Washington, DC and all the things connected to that, which are all about discovery and scientific movement, and things that improve our life. And he tells a story about how he was greatly influenced in his life to achieve great things in his life. by an incident that happened when he was a child. He grew up in a rather poor, poor household. They didn’t have a lot. Clothing, it’s hard to come by and particularly shoes are hard to come by. If you ever got shoes, they’re mostly hand me downs, even that kind of wear. Once a year or so maybe to get a pair of shoes or a new pair of shoes was almost unheard of until one Christmas. Joseph was told by his grandmother, his grandmother had for his Christmas gift had paid to have a cobbler make him a new pair of shoes, a shoemaker, a cobbler in his neighborhood there was this was astounding to Joseph, this was an incredible gift. This was something he was amazed by. And he was just so overjoyed. But he said why, but he wanted to know what to do this the right way because he knew that he might not have had had not have another new pair of shoes for a long time. So he went to the cobbler and Acaba did what a cobbler does, measured at his feet and talk asked him about the his the types of shoes that he could have, that he could make for him. And essentially, the cobbler said to Joseph, there’s two basic types of shoes here that you can choose from. There’s a rounded toe shoe. And then there is a square toe shoe, which was popular at the time. And this was amazing to little Joseph. He he just couldn’t decide which one he wanted around the toe or square toe. It seemed like such a huge decision. After all, this was probably going to be his only parachute is for a long time he was going to have to live in the shoes. The cover said, well, Joseph, take your time, take a couple days. Think about it. And then we’ll get started on your new shoes. Well, for a couple days, Joseph went into the coffee shop two or three times a day. Each time he was talking to the cobbler and looking at the designs for shoes, the round toe shoes, and the square toe shoes and he just couldn’t decide after all, you know, the round toe shoe seemed much seemed so practical for you know, going to school and doing his his chores and the things that he needed to do the round toed shoes, seeing the way to go but Oh, man, then again, those square toed shoes. They were cool. They were the fashion of the time. And that wouldn’t that be awesome? To be the guy with the square toe shoes and he and he gets into the thing about it procrastinate, go back and forth square toes round toes, what was he going to do? And he couldn’t make up his mind he he was kind of bug and you know bugging the heck out of the cobbler really, but he just couldn’t decide. He kept procrastinating. What I sometimes called prank procrastinating today, until the day after. Finally, on the third day after doing this process for two days.
On the third day he went back into the copper shop. And surprisingly, but joyfully the copper just handed him a shoe box wrapped in brown paper and said here’s your new shoes son of Joseph was met, he was just excited he raced on home. And he tore open the brown paper on the box and open up the shoe shoe box and the wrapping and there he found a beautiful pair of brown leather shoes. The right shoe had a rounded toe, and the left shoe had a square toe. Joseph learned a difficult lesson that day about decisions. If you don’t make decisions yourself, someone else is going to make your decision for you. And he learned if you want to have a full life. A full life comes when you take personal responsibility and for the choices that you make when you become your own decider. And chief. Friends, let me encourage you in your life to be your own decider and chief. Because there are always circumstances which happened in this world. There are circumstances which happened which are out of our control. And sometimes there are events that happened to us that are just bad events. You lose your job, you get a diagnosis of cancer, you have a divorce in the family. You have a loved one who passes away
Unknown Speaker 6:38
your deep in debt.
Brad Miller 6:41
All these things can happen to us and likely have at one time or another, if not they will. Your decision is how you deal with those things. But the thing is you need to make a decision. When you make a decision, you can then move forward from that point to what’s next. Yeah, they’re impacts of our decisions. And they can be great or they can be difficult at times. But if you don’t make a decision, life will happen. It will happen on your behalf. You need to take full responsibility 100% responsibility for what goes on in your life. And therefore that is one of the keys to having a life of peace, of prosperity and purpose. What we like to call the promised life. You can find out more about the promise life by going to our website, pathway promise.com. And there you can find back episodes. With lots of great teaching on the pathway to promise podcast and some other opportunities to learn more. You can check out our free gift we have for you the four minute way to frame your day to going to be with you. Tune in again next time to pathway to promise podcast we’ll have more stories hope to influence and empower your life to help you overcome adversity to achieve your promise life of peace, prosperity, and purpose. Until next time, this is Dr Brad Miller encouraging you to keep your promises because there’s power and a promise kept

Unknown Speaker 2:18
a few years ago
Unknown Speaker 2:22
a little boy,
Unknown Speaker 2:24
six years old,
Unknown Speaker 2:27
was in a terrible, terrible house fire
Unknown Speaker 2:31
and his body was burned
Unknown Speaker 2:35
over 60% of his body.
Unknown Speaker 2:42
His condition
Unknown Speaker 2:45
was critical.
Unknown Speaker 2:48
It was one overheating this needed special care and special services of hospitals that were specialized in burn victims.
Unknown Speaker 2:59
And
Unknown Speaker 3:00
hospital he went to originally the doctors and staff there didn’t think he would last very long and so they
Unknown Speaker 3:09
chose not to admit him.
Unknown Speaker 3:12
But his parents found their way to a hospital that had a burn unit.
Unknown Speaker 3:18
And through the heroic efforts of several people, eight people to be exact.
Unknown Speaker 3:25
He was saved, his life was saved.
Unknown Speaker 3:29
It was a people, his parents, three nurses and three doctors.
Unknown Speaker 3:36
But his life was saved not just over a course of a few days, his life was really saved over the course of 14 months.
Unknown Speaker 3:45
And this drama, these three nurses involved emerged, really, as the heroines of this drama.
Unknown Speaker 3:54
Some other nurses quit some other people who didn’t want to deal with the boy. The
Unknown Speaker 4:00
Women, these three women nurses took eight hour shifts with the boy.
Unknown Speaker 4:05
And when a person is involved with a terrible burn
Unknown Speaker 4:10
the recovery process is extremely painful and involves skin grafts and operations and peeling dead and burn skin away. And it’s a excruciating Lee
Unknown Speaker 4:23
difficult, certainly on the little boy but on the nurses and the staff and the parents and everybody.
Unknown Speaker 4:30
And there are many touching moments.
Unknown Speaker 4:34
It was an excruciating time of of healing and setbacks and rehabilitation and anger and upset and the little boy actually grew to really,
Unknown Speaker 4:50
really not like the three nurses.
Unknown Speaker 4:53
I mean, he was made to him everything because you know, they were in, in his mind and what was going on. He
Unknown Speaker 5:00
thought they were the cause of his intense pain.
Unknown Speaker 5:07
And you know it was hard on those nurses as you can imagine.
Unknown Speaker 5:12
His room had to be kind of like a dungeon it was just 12 by 12 feet. The The door was shut tight shades were drawn and heat had to come from a lamp which was shining on him. And they had the humidity was so high the walls drip with moisture in and it was the smell all the time
Unknown Speaker 5:36
of burnt flesh and the dressings, the the antiseptic smell of the dressings that they used on his burns.
Unknown Speaker 5:47
But the nurses stayed with him.
Unknown Speaker 5:49
They stayed with him.
Unknown Speaker 5:52
They had their, you know, their caps and gowns and gloves on everyday so they could really show him
Unknown Speaker 6:00
Their faces the little boy their faces except for their eyes.
Unknown Speaker 6:04
And they were covered up and each during each shift, they would be absolutely exhausted. I mean usually this they be come out of these situations exhausted and drenched with sweat
Unknown Speaker 6:19
and they had to assist with many difficult procedures. This went on for 14 months.
Unknown Speaker 6:27
Those three women dedicated their life to this alien boy who didn’t always appreciate it.
Unknown Speaker 6:35
That one day,
Unknown Speaker 6:37
14 months after the terrible fire which burnt him
Unknown Speaker 6:43
he was finally able to get out of his bed
Unknown Speaker 6:48
and walk down the hallway of the hospital. Oh, that was a great day. That was a great day for everybody. Everybody was just jubilant. Then the three the nurses and the doctors and the patient
Unknown Speaker 7:00
And the everybody’s the boy, of course, everybody was just excited to be because finally their tireless effort had paid off. And here’s the thing, friends.
Unknown Speaker 7:13
The lives of all three of those nurses were so deepened by their sense of satisfaction, that they had fought off the temptation to quit many times over the 14 months. And you know what they said?
Unknown Speaker 7:27
They said, if they had to do it again, they would gladly do it again.
Unknown Speaker 7:33
They were satisfied with their work, even though their work was terribly,
Unknown Speaker 7:42
terribly grueling.
Unknown Speaker 7:46
You see, friends, these three nurses had found some very focused way to serve someone truly in need. And by so by doing that they accomplish something
Unknown Speaker 8:00
Truly significant.
Unknown Speaker 8:04
We are truly happy friends, when we do something for other especially someone who’s in need,
Unknown Speaker 8:13
how thrilling it is, to make a true difference in the life of somebody.
Unknown Speaker 8:19
That’s how you can be happy and choose not to burn up. But to build up.
Unknown Speaker 8:27
My hope and prayer for you, my friend is that you will not be burned up by the things in your life, by the pressures in your life to to ascend in some way in your job, or the pressures in your life to deal with some terrible circumstance. Maybe you have a disease that you’re dealing with or, or difficult, difficult marriage or relationship.
Unknown Speaker 8:49
You know, we choose whether we’re getting burnt up by that.
Unknown Speaker 8:52
Or we can persevere through what can be really painful times and really go on
Unknown Speaker 9:00
build up your life build up others, it’s going to be tough. It’s always tough. But guess what the payoff is incredible. You put in the effort you put in the perseverance you
Unknown Speaker 9:12
deal with, you know,
Unknown Speaker 9:15
the metaphor, if you will of burnt bodies and dead skin, and in in gratitude, you deal with all that.
Unknown Speaker 9:23
But the sense of satisfaction comes, when you know that you have done well
Unknown Speaker 9:30
done well.
Unknown Speaker 9:32
A phrase of the Bible says, when you have done well, you have done well good and faithful servant.
Unknown Speaker 9:39
I encourage you
Unknown Speaker 9:42
to build up yourself and build up others and to persevere.
Unknown Speaker 9:47
