Unknown Speaker 1:18
In the long run,
Unknown Speaker 1:23
Dr. Norman Vincent peel, the author of the power of positive thinking and many other books and works on helping to have a great dreams and positive outlook on life was a long time pastor
Unknown Speaker 1:38
had a great career as a pastor of a church.
Unknown Speaker 1:42
And he told a story about a older woman in his congregation. 79 years old,
Unknown Speaker 1:49
who he went to visit in the hospital and she had been struck by a car in a hit and run, accident hit hit run situation she was badly
Unknown Speaker 2:00
hurt.
Unknown Speaker 2:02
In fact, she was expected to die.
Unknown Speaker 2:08
He eventually visited her when she was in the road to recovery in her home.
Unknown Speaker 2:14
And he found are still in a cast that, you know, plaster and cast that was
Unknown Speaker 2:22
covered that was up to
Unknown Speaker 2:24
extension of both of her legs and her torso. She was
Unknown Speaker 2:30
a mess in terms of her injuries,
Unknown Speaker 2:35
and the founder in her
Unknown Speaker 2:39
in a room
Unknown Speaker 2:41
where she had lots of little metals from her life.
Unknown Speaker 2:44
He saw a child’s drawing of Horus and some pictures on the shelves, and a lot of books that had been a well read
Unknown Speaker 2:54
many of them about poetry
Unknown Speaker 2:58
then on one shelf,
Unknown Speaker 3:00
relatively near to where she was laying down. There was a shelf full of brand new books.
Unknown Speaker 3:09
Really the only newer items in the room everything else had some age and to it.
Unknown Speaker 3:15
And some of them were still in wrapping or head price tags on them this type of thing.
Unknown Speaker 3:23
And Dr. Peele said to her,
Unknown Speaker 3:26
do you enjoy reading the poetry of these books here.
Unknown Speaker 3:33
And when she said she said, I love poetry, but haven’t read those yet.
Unknown Speaker 3:39
Never face lit up. She said, I’m saving them from my old age.
Unknown Speaker 3:46
And indeed, that was the case.
Unknown Speaker 3:49
She went on knowledge not only to read those books many times, but she didn’t die until she was 91 years old. 12 years or so.
Unknown Speaker 4:00
After this event occurred, and when she died, she was planning on a trip to Europe with some friends.
Unknown Speaker 4:09
The writer Louis Tresco put the sense of a long term dream this way in your heart, keep one still secret spot where dreams may go, and shelter so may thrive and grow.
Unknown Speaker 4:22
This woman
Unknown Speaker 4:25
kept her dreams alive
Unknown Speaker 4:28
and they kept her alive.
Unknown Speaker 4:33
Friends, I want to invite you to keep your dreams alive, whatever they are, you may have submerged them deeply.
Unknown Speaker 4:42
But in the long run, you can make progress and achieve your goals. If you keep at it, and keep an attitude of in the long run, that this can happen. I invite you to have a sense of making progress in life.
Unknown Speaker 5:00
could not be too debilitated or setback, by an injury or an accident in the moment or circumstances or things that are beyond your control. But keep moving. Keep going forward. Keep a larger picture in mind, keep a greater goal in mind of what you want to accomplish.
Unknown Speaker 5:26
I believe in my life and your life, we all have God given great dreams.
Unknown Speaker 5:33
Dreams, what I call the promise life, that is your life a peace, prosperity and purpose. A place where you have peace, the peace of mind, of knowing you’re in a good place and mentally and emotionally
Unknown Speaker 5:45
where you have
Unknown Speaker 5:47
where you have profitability in the sense of having all that you need in life, not lacking not for want
Unknown Speaker 5:54
and that you have a purpose that is a direction in your life. That is a sense of of value.
Unknown Speaker 6:00
That you add to others. That’s what gives us a sense of meaning fullness in life. Because so many of us experience a sense of meaning less ness and life.
Unknown Speaker 6:13
And meaninglessness often occurs when we see things only in the short term, see things only under present circumstances.
Unknown Speaker 6:20
But the power of the long run in the long run, is that there is a bigger thing and greater thing to contribute. What is it for you?
Unknown Speaker 6:30
Is it
Unknown Speaker 6:32
writing a book? Is it traveling the world? It is buying a new home? Is it getting married? Is it having a great relationship with your grandchildren?
Unknown Speaker 6:43
Whatever it is, don’t let those dreams go. Keep making progress and when you have setbacks, just see it for what they are temporary setbacks that you can keep going striving towards your dreams. And always leader either literally or metaphorically.
Unknown Speaker 7:00
Have that shelf of new books, ready to go? Something ready for what’s next.
Unknown Speaker 7:08
This is one of the secrets really friends of having a
Unknown Speaker 7:11
life that has meaningfulness in his life and your life is have a sense of longing for what’s next. And I want to encourage you to seek that out in your life.
Unknown Speaker 7:25

Hello, good people. And welcome to the pathway to promise podcast with Dr. Brad Miller it’s an honor, a privilege, a joy to have you join me today, as we continue to speak a word of hope into your life and encouragement to help you overcome adversity. To achieve your life of peace, prosperity, and purpose. And you can listen to back episodes of the pathway to promise where we got a lot of great guests who share their insights into helping you overcome adversity, to achieve your promise life. I believe that you can have I believe that you can have your promise life which is alive when you’ve overcome adversity and where you now have a place where you have a sense of calm of peace of purpose of place. That’s what we all want, isn’t it? The Bible is sometimes called that the promised land, the place where we journey through adversity to achieve your goal, or your final destination of a place of peace. But you in order to get there friends, you got to believe it. You gotta really believe it, then you gotta work for it. It’s a story about a community where the drought in this farm community had really impacted the crops really badly. And it was bad. No rain for a long time. hot, dry. folks were getting desperate, their crops were burning up in the fields. And one Sunday, the pastor of the small church in the community said there isn’t anything that’s going to save us except to pray for rain. So he told his parishioners go home, believe and come back next Sunday ready to thank God for sending rain. So the people did what they were told and return they went home and they prayed and and they returned to church the following Sunday. But as they came in, as soon as the pastor saw them, he was furious. He was mad. He said, we can’t worship the day, you do not believe. But the people said we prayed and we believed. Believe, said the pastor, then where are your umbrellas? I think that story applies to all of us. Because sometimes we say we believe but maybe we really don’t. And we really don’t because we leave our umbrellas at home. That is we haven’t taken the proper action. To follow up with our belief. We are we’re just kind of in that, you know, hope against hope or wish against wish and, and just not really, truly believing in our core that good things going to happen to us. We don’t expect much. So we get little Am I want I want to share with you today, Francis, pray big dreams, but work hard towards it. And believe that your belief and your prayers will bear fruit. Many of us as expect our dreams and our desires will just pass us by as if we were just going through kind of going through the motions. And other people have belief and expectation and good things happen. So my my question to you today, Francis, what approach you want to go for you want to go through the motions? And that really believe that good things can happen to you? Or do you want to live in a land of belief? Work hard towards achieving it? That doesn’t mean bad things don’t happen to us? Of course they do. We have you know, we have a death of a loved one. We have terrible disease, we have financial problems, all kinds of stuff can happen to us that circumstances. But I’m talking about a deep abiding deep down belief that you really truly believe and have faith that will happen. But it really doesn’t happen friends unless we work hard for it too. So my question to you Do you believe it
Unknown Speaker 4:30
or not?
Brad Miller 4:34
And it’s so will you bring your umbrella. We are here at the pathway to promise podcast to help you with your belief. To give you reasons to believe that you can overcome whatever adversity strikes your life. And to get better, not better, but get better. And so we are here to be helpful you guys check out our website pathway promise calm. And check us check out our back episodes of the pathway to promise podcasts it can be helpful to you to help you develop a plan and a strategy and help you be encouraged. Hello again, good people and welcome to the pathway to promise podcast with Dr. Brad Miller where it is our mission. It is our purpose, to be an encourager in your life, to be a purveyor of hope to help you overcome any adversity that you have to achieve success, what we call the promise life of peace, prosperity, and purpose. And we do so by telling great stories, like today’s story called decider in chief. And by interviewing and talking with great leaders, who have strategies and who have overcome adversity in their own lives, and they have lessons to teach us. You can check all that out at our website, pathway promise com, we got a free gift for you there for a minute way to frame your day for success. You can check that out. You can also check us out at iTunes, and on Facebook facebook.com slash pathway promise today decider in chief. Joseph Henry was a great American scientists who was one of the initial people to start what we now know as the Smithsonian Institute, that great incredible Museum in Washington, DC and all the things connected to that, which are all about discovery and scientific movement, and things that improve our life. And he tells a story about how he was greatly influenced in his life to achieve great things in his life. by an incident that happened when he was a child. He grew up in a rather poor, poor household. They didn’t have a lot. Clothing, it’s hard to come by and particularly shoes are hard to come by. If you ever got shoes, they’re mostly hand me downs, even that kind of wear. Once a year or so maybe to get a pair of shoes or a new pair of shoes was almost unheard of until one Christmas. Joseph was told by his grandmother, his grandmother had for his Christmas gift had paid to have a cobbler make him a new pair of shoes, a shoemaker, a cobbler in his neighborhood there was this was astounding to Joseph, this was an incredible gift. This was something he was amazed by. And he was just so overjoyed. But he said why, but he wanted to know what to do this the right way because he knew that he might not have had had not have another new pair of shoes for a long time. So he went to the cobbler and Acaba did what a cobbler does, measured at his feet and talk asked him about the his the types of shoes that he could have, that he could make for him. And essentially, the cobbler said to Joseph, there’s two basic types of shoes here that you can choose from. There’s a rounded toe shoe. And then there is a square toe shoe, which was popular at the time. And this was amazing to little Joseph. He he just couldn’t decide which one he wanted around the toe or square toe. It seemed like such a huge decision. After all, this was probably going to be his only parachute is for a long time he was going to have to live in the shoes. The cover said, well, Joseph, take your time, take a couple days. Think about it. And then we’ll get started on your new shoes. Well, for a couple days, Joseph went into the coffee shop two or three times a day. Each time he was talking to the cobbler and looking at the designs for shoes, the round toe shoes, and the square toe shoes and he just couldn’t decide after all, you know, the round toe shoe seemed much seemed so practical for you know, going to school and doing his his chores and the things that he needed to do the round toed shoes, seeing the way to go but Oh, man, then again, those square toed shoes. They were cool. They were the fashion of the time. And that wouldn’t that be awesome? To be the guy with the square toe shoes and he and he gets into the thing about it procrastinate, go back and forth square toes round toes, what was he going to do? And he couldn’t make up his mind he he was kind of bug and you know bugging the heck out of the cobbler really, but he just couldn’t decide. He kept procrastinating. What I sometimes called prank procrastinating today, until the day after. Finally, on the third day after doing this process for two days.
On the third day he went back into the copper shop. And surprisingly, but joyfully the copper just handed him a shoe box wrapped in brown paper and said here’s your new shoes son of Joseph was met, he was just excited he raced on home. And he tore open the brown paper on the box and open up the shoe shoe box and the wrapping and there he found a beautiful pair of brown leather shoes. The right shoe had a rounded toe, and the left shoe had a square toe. Joseph learned a difficult lesson that day about decisions. If you don’t make decisions yourself, someone else is going to make your decision for you. And he learned if you want to have a full life. A full life comes when you take personal responsibility and for the choices that you make when you become your own decider. And chief. Friends, let me encourage you in your life to be your own decider and chief. Because there are always circumstances which happened in this world. There are circumstances which happened which are out of our control. And sometimes there are events that happened to us that are just bad events. You lose your job, you get a diagnosis of cancer, you have a divorce in the family. You have a loved one who passes away
Unknown Speaker 6:38
your deep in debt.
Brad Miller 6:41
All these things can happen to us and likely have at one time or another, if not they will. Your decision is how you deal with those things. But the thing is you need to make a decision. When you make a decision, you can then move forward from that point to what’s next. Yeah, they’re impacts of our decisions. And they can be great or they can be difficult at times. But if you don’t make a decision, life will happen. It will happen on your behalf. You need to take full responsibility 100% responsibility for what goes on in your life. And therefore that is one of the keys to having a life of peace, of prosperity and purpose. What we like to call the promised life. You can find out more about the promise life by going to our website, pathway promise.com. And there you can find back episodes. With lots of great teaching on the pathway to promise podcast and some other opportunities to learn more. You can check out our free gift we have for you the four minute way to frame your day to going to be with you. Tune in again next time to pathway to promise podcast we’ll have more stories hope to influence and empower your life to help you overcome adversity to achieve your promise life of peace, prosperity, and purpose. Until next time, this is Dr Brad Miller encouraging you to keep your promises because there’s power and a promise kept
