211: Defeating Despair by Restoring Reason with Dr. Travis M. Corcoran

He is an advocate for the liberal arts and a philosopher who aids aspirants in their self-taught education by providing them with the necessary guidance. Besides his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, he also has a minor in Biology.

Dr. Travis had a realization of how hard it is to teach and help someone due to the fact that people are often emotionally involved with everything in their lives.

Despite being an expert, Dr. Travis had a hard time connecting with his family with regard to the information he was sharing. They don’t see him as an expert. This is why he tried to teach them the ‘Trivium’ without them knowing. This is to avoid engaging in arguments and debates with them. Eventually, years after, his family finally looked at him as someone they trusted in the field.

Dr. Travis is also an author of the book entitled “Restoring Reason: Using the Ancient Liberal Arts to Defend Against Modern Manipulation.” This book aims to share knowledge on how liberal arts can help make decisions that will lead to a high-quality life.

Episode 211 of The Beyond Adversity Podcast is for those who don’t aim to make the right decisions to have a high-quality life.

In this episode, the topics discussed are all about the books Restoring Reason and The Trivium. It talks about the ‘trivium’ and the difference between knowledge, understanding, and wisdom, as well as the ancient liberal arts and their application to business, work, healthcare, and politics.

209: How Tik Tok Saved A Mom From Disaster with Melissa Lea Hughes

Melissa talks about the struggles and difficult circumstances that she went through during the real, adverse event that impacted all of us, the COVID crisis, and how she was able to work through all of it and eventually turned her life around through the power of social media. Dr. Miller and Melissa will also talk about many other things such as family, faith, and about being a mother.

Melissa lost her job after the pandemic started. Her family just moved into their new home from living overseas and she needed a job to get the house. Fortunately, there was one job that was available for her, and it was working in childcare. She was very grateful for that job because she was able to buy the house with her husband with its help.

However, during that time she realized that she didn’t really have a plan. And as much as she loved children, she didn’t really want to work in childcare since she’d rather be home with her own two children.

She tried to figure out what to do with her life in a completely new direction. It was a scary spot for her to be in. She sympathized with everyone else that felt the same thing during the pandemic. She just tried to think and pray about what her next step would be and what her life is going to look like moving forward.

After some time of thinking and prayer, what she did was write down a list of what she would really want in a job. And then in January 2021, she felt that God was really pushing her to go on social media and start posting videos.

She talked to her husband about it and they both asked God that if this is something she should give her time to, can he please make it clear to them and then five days later, Melissa uploaded a video on TikTok which eventually generated 22 million views and landed her a spot on the Kelly Clarkson show.

Melissa believes that God has a plan for everybody. That he’s got good things in store for everyone.

Episode 209 of The Beyond Adversity Podcast is a must-listen for anyone who’s feeling stuck with their current state in life and has given up on everything. Being in a tight spot like that is one of the scariest and most challenging feelings in the world. So you must never give up hope and continue to fight for a better life. It’s okay to be not okay. And if you need a guide to help you then somehow, some way, God will eventually provide you with an answer. All you have to do is ask.

207: Resolving Childhood Trauma with The Power of A Love That Heals with Danielle Bernock

Danielle Bernock is Dr. Brad Miller’s guest on Episode 207 of “The Beyond Adversity Podcast.”

Danielle talks about childhood trauma and how you can get through it.

In her personal experience, she is a survivor of multiple childhood traumas. She dismissed these traumas because she thought they were not bad enough because she was not sexually molested, hadn’t been through a natural disaster, or had a major traumatic event in her childhood.

She compared all the trauma she has been through to things that are massive in scale, which is why she dismissed them as nothing.

She grew up in a very authoritarian home. Whenever she had emotions, all she did was keep them inside her. Her parents did not help with this which is why she concluded that this form of the trauma she had is called childhood emotional neglect.

Bullying was also one of the traumas she went through. She was not born Danielle Bernock. She legally changed her name in 1988. Her trauma was associated with her old name.

One of the events that affected her entire life was a public humiliation she suffered in front of the entire church.

However, she eventually intervened and through many processes, she was healed of all the trauma she had.

She also suffered a lot of death while growing up. Her grandmother, her father, her older brother, and a close friend in high school all died in a 4–5-year period, which added to the neglect she felt at home and the bullying she had in church, among other things.

Danielle had a warrior mindset even though she was a highly sensitive person. She decided that she is not going to live like she was at the time. She had the drive to want to heal, be different, and change.

A turning point in her life was when she went on a road trip with a friend, and she discovered her love for God.

Episode 207 of The Beyond Adversity Podcast is a must-listen for anyone who’s been through trauma and has considered giving up. Receiving love and loving yourself are keys to a fulfilled life. It might be hard but struggling and never giving up will take you a long way in life. All you have to do is fight.
